❧ Chapter 2; Crossing Paths
"What was that all about, Ayden?" I looked at my friend in the eye and shrugged. "There was something about her.. But I cannot explain the feelings that were stirring in me just now," I answered truthfully. "Well, she's kinda cute I guess.." Cameron commented. "Mmhmm." I agreed, as I watched her disappear from the corner of my eyes.
One month later..
I was walking towards the train station, deep in thought.
Okay, Diana, It's the first day of school. Just be yourself. Everything's going to be okay. I reassured myself.
Okay.. Everything. Is going to be okay, right? I stopped in my tracks and looked around. Where
were they? Since it's the first day of school, I've gotten 2 friends to accompany me to school for the first 2 days. We used to be from the same Secondary school, so it wasn't that awkward. I remember being rather surprised that we were enrolled to the same school, but there were only 5 Polytechnics in Singapore, anyway. Subconsciously, I took out my cellphone and looked through the photos nonchalantly. My heart then skipped a beat when the image reflected in my eyes was the picture from the cosfest.
I was so engrossed looking at the picture that I didn't notice the presence of my ex-classmates beside me. "Diana," Gabriel started. I jumped, and turned to face Gabriel and Eric. "Since when have you guys been here?" I asked, flushing.
Hopefully they didn't notice my expression when I was staring at the picture.. "Oh, not too long ago. Who's that guy, anyway?" That question caught me off guard. Just as I was about to defend myself, Eric spoke. "You should've seen the look on your face! Oh well, the train's here. Let's go!" I heaved a sigh of relief and shuffled into the train behind them. "Hey, what do you thi-" I tried starting a conversation, but both of my friends were staring ahead of me. "What.." I began, and followed the direction they were staring at.
My whole body froze. Right in front of my very eyes, was
him. The guy whose name was a mystery to me, along with he himself. I blinked, and looked up at my friends again. Gabriel placed his hand on my head. "Do you know him?" he asked. "N-not really," I confessed. Eric raised a brow. "That's surprising. Judging from the way you were staring at the picture, I thought that you two at least know each other." My eyes darted away and I stared at my feet. "Is that weird?" I began. "Not knowing him at all, having a picture of him in my phone.. We didn't talk much. Heck, I don't even know his name! But even so.." I trailed off. "Even so?" they pressed. "I can't seem to get him off my mind. It's crazy, isn't it? I get all shy and stuff whenever I think about him," Both of them went silent for awhile, and the only thing that I could hear was the sound of the tracks beneath the train.
"Who knows? Who are we to judge, am I right?" Gabriel smiled. My eyes widened in surprise, then relaxed. "Yeah, you're probably right." For the rest of the train ride, we just basically trash-talked. First day of school jitters were getting into me, and I needed to occupy my mind, otherwise I was going to have a nervous breakdown. When we reached the campus, I got separated from both Gabriel and Eric, which made me panic even more. Well, I guess it couldn't be helped, since the whole "Orientation" would allow me to mix around and find some buddies to settle down with.
"Okay, since we're all gathered, let's go!" Our group leader announced. Everyone followed in silence.
Mmmm.. It's so quiet, I thought. "Hey," A voice floated to my ear. I turned to the side to see a girl with chocolate brown hair, smiling at me. "I'm Reira," she introduced, smiling once again. Returning the smile, I too, introduced myself. Things hit off rather well with Reira, which made me loosen up a little.
See, it's all going to be okay. My conscious nagged at me. Slowly, bit by bit, I've managed to make friends with everyone in the group. It wasn't easy, of course. But it was worth it.
"Hey Diana, let's head back to the train station together," Reira suggested. I widened my eyes and accepted the offer. "Alex, Jasmine, Evan, are you coming?" I asked. "Yeah, in a bit!" Alex responded, while bending down to tie his shoelaces. Soon enough, we were walking together in a group.
At last, I've gotten the social life I've always dreamed of, I guess. Maintaining it would be hard, but it'd be worth a shot. Right? My eyes scanned through the horizon. The sun was setting, reminding us that the long day that we had was ending soon. Maybe school's not that bad after all..
