❧ Chapter 3; Breaking the ice
Eyes cast down, staring far into space. His hair swept past his forehead, and his palm propped his head upright. There he was, sitting in the same spot everyday, at this section of the train. It's been a few weeks, but he never noticed me. My heart pounded just at the sight of him, but what was I supposed to do, really? I reluctantly looked away and stared out of the window. I had to go to school alone today, for Reira would be slightly later than usual.
Well, at least I'd be meeting the others at the train station near school..
I bit my lip in exasperation and heaved a sigh to myself. Ever since I've met him, I could not go a day without thinking about him. Could not forget the gesture of him casually draping his arm over me.
Who does he think he is; messing with my head like that? Despite that.. There was a strong urge for me to approach him and get to know him better. I wanted to know everything about him. But that just sounds so stalkerish, I know.
Bzzt bzzt. I rummaged my bag and took a hold of my cellphone. Before I could see the text message, my clumsiness caused my own cellphone to slip out of my fingers and drop onto the floor.
Damn it, this is so embarrassing! I thought, as I bent to pick up my phone. I grabbed it, but it fell again.
Ugh! As I reached for it once more, a hand beat me there. I flushed as I straightened my back. "Here. Hey, you're that girl, aren't you?"
My eyes widened in surprise, my mouth slightly ajar. Right in front of me, holding my cellphone towards me.. Was him.
Strange, I've never really seen him so close before. He doesn't really look local for one, and he had ash brown hair and hazel brown eyes.
Also, did he always have that accent? "Hey?" he asked, waving my cell in front of me. I snapped out of it and my cheeks started burning even more. "I'm sorry," I replied in a haste. "Nah, it's okay. Hey, we've been riding the same train every morning, haven't we?" he said calmly. "Y-you noticed?" I stammered. "Well.. Yeah, somewhat along the way.. I so happened to look up and I saw you." the honesty in his voice got to me, and for that moment, I didn't know what to say.
"And I thought that I was the only one who noticed," I replied shyly. "Well, that makes the both of us," he said, smiling. Without realizing, I smiled back, too. "Oh, I'm Ayden," he said, extending his hand. I took it and we shook hands. "Diana," I smiled. "You know, a handshake really wasn't necessary," I remarked. "It was just something I came up with on the spot," he explained. "Sureeeeeee." I teased. "Hey, I'm getting off at the next stop, so I guess I'd see you tomo-" He cut me off in mid-sentence. "I know," he smiled. I raised a brow, determined to complete my sentence. "I get off there, too," I blinked, taking it all in.
Well, I guess I didn't realize where he got off, since I've never really looked back at him when I got off..
"By the way, how old are you?" The question caught me off-guard. "S-seventeen," I stumbled, as we got off the train. "What about you.. Ayden?" I attempted to say his name as casually as I could, but I couldn't help sounding so awkward putting his name at the back of the sentence. "Me? I'm eighteen," "Oh," was all I could think of saying at that point of time. "Why? Am I too old for you?" he joked. "N-no!" I protested, blushing. I could tell that he was waiting for an explanation for my sudden outburst. "I personally prefer someone older than me.." I mumbled. "What did you say?" he asked. "It's nice to have someone older," I explained. "I see," he replied, smiling.
As soon as I walked out of the gates, Jasmine ambushed me. "There she is~" she announced playfully. "Alright, let's go!" Evan said, placing his arm around Alex. They all stopped when they noticed Ayden beside me. "I guess I'd see you around," he waved, before disappearing into the crowd of students gathered around. "Oh? Who's that?" Jasmine asked playfully. "He's not your boyfriend, is he?" Alex asked, watching Ayden leave. "Nah, we're not.. Like that." I replied. "Come to think of it, you've never really told us about your relationship status, you HAVE a boyfriend, don't you?" Jasmine pressed.
"Nope! Hurry, let's go!" And before they could ask any more questions, I pushed all 3 of them in front. Literally. "Hey, you're just friends, right?" Alex turned back to ask me. "Yeah," I replied. "Oh okay, that's nice," he commented, before turning back to wrestle Evan.
Just.. Friends. Is that all that I'm expecting? What was I expecting, anyway? "Diana, stop daydreaming and help me separate these two!" Jasmine cried. "Aw, you guys! Seriously, you're both seventeen!" I reminded them as I stepped forward to pull them apart. "Meh, I was bored!" Alex complained. "Jeez," I said, rolling my eyes.
That was when I stopped in my tracks.
Alex usually starts his silly antics out of nowhere if there was something bothering him. Right? I quickened my pace to catch up with them, my heart hammering with anxiety. "Alex," I called, placing my hand on his shoulder. "Wassup, girl?" he replied, flashing a smile. "After school, let's head back together." He was surprised for a moment, staring straight into my eyes before saying, "Uh, sure, I guess?"
Mmm yeah.. There was definitely something that's on his mind.
