❧ Chapter 5; A step forward
"Mentoring programme, eh?" I mused. "Yeah, it starts like, next monday," Reira clarified. "I know, it's just.. Hmm.. Kind of scary we're taking a new step into the Poly life," I explained. "It can't be helped," Evan stated. "We're growing OLD!" Alex exclaimed. "Oh, Alex. Were you
listening to our conversation?" I said, rolling my eyes. "Helloooooo, Alex?" Jasmine waved her hand in front of Alex's face. "I'm here, I'm here," Alex shrugged it off. "I heard that it's one mentor for a small group of 3 to 4 students," Evan said thoughtfully. "How would they go about with the grouping?" Reira asked before I could. "Probably by alphabetical order, I guess," I sighed.
"Alphabetical.. Could be. But then again.. That would be so..
weird." Alex commented. All of us narrowed our eyes as we imagined the situation. "Yeah.. Weird." we chorused. "Oh well.I'm heading off first, guys!" I said, stepping out of their way. "See you on Monday, then!" Reira smiled. "See ya!" The rest said before engaging in their own conversation. My heart fluttered as I made my way towards the library's north entrance.
Hmm, he did say that he was somewhere near the cafe.. My eyes scanned through the pool tables and couches. Still, there was no sight of Ayden. "Yo," a familiar voice could be heard. I spun around and there he was, standing in front of me.
"Yosh," I greeted. "What're you up to?" I asked, curiosity picking up. "Oh, just finishing up some assignments," he said, as he walked towards a table. "I've just finished it, actually." he told me as he shut down his laptop. "Okay then, Mister, what do you want to do?" I asked. "Hmmm, well Miss, it's a Friday. Society makes it so that Friday is the day where you do something worthwhile and have fun, yes?" he joked. "Okay Uncle, let's go and do something
fun." I teased. "Uncle? Please, I'm not
that old," he played along. "Whatever you say, Uncle. C'mon, hurry and let's go!" I joked, ignoring the playful glare he was giving me.
It's been roughly a week since Ayden came up to me in the train that day, but our relationship was really hitting off better than I expected. It was only until today that he asked me out after school, and I was kind of nervous and yet looking forward to it. It's not like we talked a lot in school anyway. I mean, I hardly see him.. The campus was huge and there were
SO MANY students. I stumbled as Ayden stopped walking. "W-wha?" was all that I could ask. His hand reached to pull the brown leather strap that was on my shoulder. "Eh?" I gasped, as the weight of my whole bag was lifted off me. "That looked heavy," he stated, before swinging the bag over his shoulder with ease. "Nah, I'm used to it already, so give it ba-ackkkkkk," I pleaded. "Nah-uh," he said stubbornly. I scowled to myself as I looked up to where my bag was; some distance away from my head.
Oh well. I didn't want to make a scene in public anyway and my back was starting to hurt. Afterall, I've been carrying my laptop all around campus for the whole day. But then again, was it really okay to let him carry my bag like that? I tried reasoning it out in my head. "Hey, I was wondering.. If you would want to watch a movie," Ayden suggested. "Oh yeah, sure." I agreed. "Aha, wait.. What do you like?" he asked. "Me? I am all for Romance and Comedy. Some Drama would be nice, too," I said thoughtfully. "Ohhhh?" he chuckled. "What?" I asked, confused. "Nah, it's nothing. I like those, too," he answered. "Really? Wow," I commented, surprised. "What is it now, Miss?" he said, narrowing his eyes at me. "Most guys would prefer something more.. Action packed, I guess? I didn't know you were one of those few that enjoyed sentimental stuff like that," I told him honestly.
"Ah, that. Well.. Is that a good or bad thing, then?" he queried. "Mmm, I'd say that it's good," I confessed. "Okay then," he smiled. It was then when we finally arrived at the mall and started making our way up to the cinema. "Oh look, there's a romance movie showing now," Ayden said, pointing at one of the posters on the wall. "O-okay, do you want to watch that, then?" He thought about it for awhile before looking at me saying, "If it's fine with you," My heart beat faster for a moment, and I could feel the blood rushing to my cheeks. "I'm fine with it," I muttered, lowering my head. "Okay then!" he responded cheerfully.
So there we were, squinting our eyes in the dark as we located our seats. "I found it," he whispered. "O-okay, I'm comi-" I cut off as I tripped over a step. Before I could face-plant on the carpeted stairs, his hand caught mine and pulled me closer for support. "Careful," he mouthed, his brows pulling down in worry. The blood stained my cheeks in a matter of seconds. I dropped my glance immediately and nodded without another word. "Let's go," he said, before making his way into the narrow aisle, his hand still grasping mine. My heart hammered against my chest as I followed him in silence. "There we go," he commented as he released his firm yet gentle grip on my wrist.
Why am I getting so worked up for? It's just Ayden. Also, it's not like what happened was anything special, right? Oh well. Stop over-thinking, Diana. My eyelids slid shut as I took a long, deep breath to calm myself down.
There. My eyes opened as I stared ahead, watching the screen slowly fade into the darkness. The movie itself was filled with crude humor, and it got a little awkward to be watching it with someone whom I've just achieved a budding friendship with, but Ayden's carefree laughter melted all of my discomfort. By the end of the movie, we've both laughed, and our heart strings were pulled every once in awhile as the movie unfolded itself before our very eyes.
"Hey, drop me a text when you get home, alright?" Ayden winked. "Oh okay, but I don't have your number," I batted my lashes before bursting into a fit of laughter. "Give me that," he said as he playfully snatched my cell from my palm. "H-hey!" I sputtered, shocked. "Here," he said, flashing a smile as he returned me both my cell
AND my bag. "Thanks," I murmured. "No problem! I'd see you in school on Monday, then!" He smiled as he waved me goodbye. "Yeah!" I smiled back as I too, turned and headed home.
