❧ Chapter 6; Stuck in the middle
It was Reira on my left and Alex on my right. Jasmine sat across the table with Evan. We were all quiet, chewing on our lunch thoughtfully. "We'd probably be in different groups," I sighed. "Not necessarily," Evan countered. "i think that the most probable grouping is that some of us will be together, some would be another group," he continued. "Ah, Evan. You're always providing the most useful information," Jasmine commented. "Really?" Evan asked, dumbfounded. "Oh, and he's blur, too." Reira laughed. "Are you guys done?" Alex asked, peering into our bowls. I grabbed my tray and we all stood up, one by one. After putting our trays away, we made our way out of the cafeteria.
Thus, the five teenagers walked across the carpeted floors of the hallways and were soon standing in front of a bulletin board. "Uh, let's see.." I said out loud. "There! Alex, Daryl, Diana, Justin and Reira," Alex announced. "..Alice, Daniel, Evan, Jasmine and Sherry," Evan muttered. "Aw, but hey, at least we have someone we know with us, right?" Jasmine reassured. "Yeah," Reira agreed. "Besides, we've already foreseen that this would happen," I stated. "That's true.." Reira agreed. "Eh.. Guys?" Evan said, sounding anxious. "Yes?" the rest of us asked. "The mentoring session is starting soon. We have to report at the respective venues, so.. We better make a run for it!" He sputtered, dragging Jasmine along with him.
"Eh..?" Was all I could say. "Come on, Diana, you slow-poke. We're gonna be late," Reira said as she slipped her hand into mine. "Good thing that our venue is not really far away from the bulletin board," Alex said, heaving a sigh. Reira just nodded. Here we are at Block E, and we headed to the lift lobby. "Level five," Alex muttered as he jabbed the lift's button. "I'm kind of nervous. I wonder what Daniel and Sherry are like," I mumbled. Alex then patted me on the shoulder. "Don't worry. You have us," he said, smiling.
That's true, but there's just something else that's causing me to be so nervous.. I don't know what it is, though.. The door opened and we all started walking again.
It wasn't before long we were standing before a room. The door swung open and I followed behind Reira and Alex quietly. "Hi there!" Reira chirped. "Hello," .."Hi," Daniel and Sherry responded. More greetings were exchanged. Shortly after our introductions were made, the door opened again. Everyone turned and stared at our Mentor.
No way.. This is too much of a coincidence.. What was he doing here? "Hey guys!" Ayden greeted, his gaze sweeping across the room as he flashed a smile. "My name is Ayden and I will be your Mentor for this short period of time," he explained. "Diana!" Reira hissed. I turned to her, raising a brow. "He's cute," she said as her eyes checked Ayden out. It felt like as if my heart dropped to the ground. "Yeah.. He sure is.." I replied.
"Well, let's get started! First off, I will explain to you what you would be expected to do in the near future," Ayden started. That was when I realized that even Sherry had her eyes glued all over him. The both of them were practically gawking at Ayden's body. It made me
so uncomfortable. From the corner of my eyes, I caught Alex staring at me with a pained expression, but it converted into a smile instead when he saw me looking at him.
I wonder what's in his mind.. "Diana?" Ayden asked. "Y-yes?" I flushed. "You alright?" He asked again. I could feel my whole face heating up even more. "Yeah," I lied. By now, everyone was staring at me.
It was silent for awhile, except for Ayden's voice. I took down some notes, just in case I forget what Ayden said. After all, I was really forgetful. "Basically, you would be doing things like this for the whole of this year.." Ayden continued. "Any questions?"he finished. "What's your number?" Reira asked suggestively. "Oh yeah, I was planning to let you all know. In case you need to ask me stuff. Here," Ayden said, handing us a slip of paper each, with both his name, e-mail address and contact number. "If that's all you need to know, you may all leave," Ayden finished once again. I slipped the notepad into my bag and stood up.
"Hey Diana, you were actually taking note of what Ayden was explaining, right?" Reira asked as soon as we reached the lift lobby. "Uh, yeah.." I mumbled. "Can you show it to me? I wasn't paying attention to whatever he was saying
AT ALL!" She gushed. "Is that so.." I asked, slightly annoyed. "Yeah, I mean.. He's
super duper cute! How could someone be so
good-looking?! And then there's his accent! He's so-" her excitement died to a bare whisper as Ayden stepped into the lift with us. "...
Attractive," Reira finished. Ayden looked up and smiled at me. I could barely return his smile. Instead, I slid my hand into my bag and pulled out my notebook. Without another word, I pushed it to Reira. "Thanks," she whispered.
The doors opened and I walked out, hastening my steps.
Yes, Reira is what I consider one of my bestfriends, but I just couldn't stand the way she was acting! Who does she think that she is, anyway? Acting all close to him.. Not respecting his privacy.. "Diana!" Alex called, trying to catch up to me. "Sorry guys, I just remembered that I had something to do, you guys go ahead without me," I called back as I made a turn.
Someone like that.. Isn't what I would want.. In a friend.
